How to Clean, Store, and Maintain Your Aluminum RIB Boat for Maximum Lifespan
An aluminum hull Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) is one of the most durable, reliable, and versatile vessels on the water. Whether used as a luxury yacht tender, a commercial workboat, or a recreational fishing craft, your RIB is built to withstand harsh marine environments. However, routine maintenance is the secret to extending its operational lifespan to 15–20+ years.

1. Tube Care: Rinsing and UV Protection (PVC & Hypalon)
Saltwater crystals, diesel residue, and prolonged sunlight exposure are the primary elements that degrade fabric coatings over time.
- Freshwater Flush After Every Trip: Salt crystals act like fine sandpaper when rubbed between the tube and dock lines. Always rinse your pontoons with clean, fresh water after saltwater operations.
- Removing Marine Growth & Grease: Wash tubes using mild, non-abrasive marine soap. Avoid harsh petroleum-based solvents or acetone, which can weaken seam adhesives and strip protective topcoats.
- UV Shielding: While our 1.2mm PVC and Hypalon fabrics feature molecular-level UV inhibitors, applying a specialized marine UV protectant twice a season significantly slows down sun fading and surface oxidation.

2. Aluminum Hull Preservation: Preventing Electrolytic Corrosion
Our RIB hulls are constructed from marine-grade 5083 aluminum alloy, renowned for its exceptional natural corrosion resistance. To maintain the integrity of the metal hull:
- Inspect Sacrificial Anodes: If your RIB is equipped with outboard engines or metal fittings, regularly inspect the zinc or aluminum anodes. Replace them when they are 50% consumed to prevent galvanic corrosion on the hull.
- Check Bottom Paint / Coatings: Inspect the deep-V hull for deep gouges after landing on rocky beaches or concrete ramps. Touch up any bare metal spots with marine-grade aluminum primer to preserve the protective seal.
3. Air Valve & Pressure Maintenance
Sand grains and salt crusting inside air valves are the #1 cause of minor, slow air leaks.
- Keep Valve Chambers Clean: Before connecting your pump nozzle, blow away dry sand or debris around the valve cap. Periodically rinse the spring mechanism with fresh water.
- Monitor Ambient Thermal Expansion: Air inside the tubes expands in hot sunlight and contracts in cooler evening air. Avoid over-inflating your boat on hot days to prevent unnecessary pressure stress on welded seams.
4. Off-Season & Long-Term Storage Best Practices
If you are storing your RIB during the winter or between cruising seasons, follow these steps to ensure it is ocean-ready when you unroll or launch it again:
- Thoroughly Clean & Dry: Ensure the deck, transom corners, and tube seams are 100% dry before putting on a boat cover. Trapped moisture can invite mold and mildew.
- Partial Inflation for Storage: If storing on a trailer or davits, leave the buoyancy tubes partially inflated (around 50% pressure). This maintains the shape of the fabric without putting constant stress on the seams.
- Use a Breathable Marine Cover: Store the boat under a UV-resistant, waterproof, yet breathable boat cover to prevent moisture buildup while shielding it from rain, snow, and bird droppings.
